1950-1979 Engine Flywheel Seal Installation Tool

Install your VW rear main seal squarely and evenly with a flywheel seal installation tool designed for proper fit and leak prevention.

This Volkswagen flywheel rear main seal installation tool is designed for Air Cooled VW engines and simplifies installation of the flywheel seal using the stock gland nut. By applying even pressure across the seal surface, it helps ensure proper seating to reduce the risk of leaks and premature seal failure.

This heavy-duty economy-style installer works with 1200cc through 1600cc VW engines and is ideal for maintenance or engine rebuild work. The flat installation surface helps keep the seal square during installation for more reliable results.

This tool requires removal of the crankshaft dowel pins during use, unlike deluxe installer versions.

How To Use the 1950-1979 VW Air Cooled Engine Flywheel Seal Installation Tool

1950-1979 Volkswagen Air Cooled Models

Mid America Motorworks Technical Tip
MAM Part Number: 300741

Mid America Motorworks provides restoration and maintenance parts for classic Volkswagen enthusiasts. Use the following instructions as a general guide for installing the flywheel seal using the proper installation tool on your 1950-1979 VW Air Cooled engine.

Flywheel Seal Installation Procedure

  1. Clean the rear of the engine case where the flywheel seal will be installed.
  2. Check that the threads inside the end of the crankshaft are clean. To verify thread condition, screw the gland nut (flywheel retaining bolt) into the crankshaft until all threads are fully engaged and the bolt bottoms out.
  3. Remove the four stock dowel pins from the end of the crankshaft. Retain the dowel pins for reinstallation after the flywheel seal is installed.
  4. Position the flywheel seal with the open side facing into the engine. Carefully set the seal into place. The beveled edge on both the seal and engine case will help hold the seal in position.
  5. Place the installation tool washer over the stock gland nut and thread the gland nut by hand into the crankshaft.

    Important:
Be sure there are approximately 1-1/2 to 2 complete turns of the nut before pressure is applied to the seal. If necessary, remove the nut and installation tool, lightly tap the seal further into the engine case, and retry installation.

  6. Press the seal fully into the engine case by tightening the gland nut and installation washer until the nut bottoms out. The seal should sit at least flush with the back of the engine case. If additional depth is required, the seal may be pressed further into the case by reversing the installation washer and adding the stock washer
