1950-1979 Professional Flywheel Seal Installer Tool

Install rear main seals accurately and evenly with a professional-grade flywheel seal installer designed for Air Cooled Volkswagen engines.

This professional Volkswagen flywheel seal installer tool is designed to accurately press the rear main seal into the engine case using the crankshaft gland nut threads. By pulling the seal into position evenly, it helps eliminate improper installation that can lead to leaks or premature seal failure.

Unlike economy-style tools, this deluxe installer features clearance for stock and longer high-performance crankshaft dowel pins, allowing seal installation without removing the dowel pins. Built from durable metal with a black oxide finish, it is ideal for both professional engine builders and serious Air Cooled VW enthusiasts.

This tool fits 1200cc through 1600cc Beetle-style engines and is not compatible with 1700cc-2000cc Type 4 engines.

Fits the Following Volkswagen Models:
Standard Beetle: 1946-1977

How to Use the 1950-1979 VW Air Cooled Engine Professional Flywheel Seal Installer Tool

1950-1979 Volkswagen Air Cooled Models

Mid America Motorworks Technical Tip
MAM Part Number: 300738

Mid America Motorworks provides restoration and maintenance parts for classic Volkswagen enthusiasts. Use the following instructions as a general guide for installing the flywheel seal using the proper installation tool on your 1950-1979 VW Air Cooled engine.

Professional Flywheel Seal Installer Tool Instructions

  1. Clean the rear of the engine case where the flywheel seal is to be installed.
  2. Check that the threads inside the end of the crankshaft are clean. To verify thread condition, screw the flywheel seal installer into the end of the crankshaft until all threads are engaged and the bolt bottoms out.
  3. Position the flywheel seal with the open side facing into the engine. Carefully set the seal into place. The beveled edge on both the seal and engine case will help hold the seal in position.
  4. Thread the installation tool nut by hand into the crankshaft.

    Important:
Be sure there are approximately 1-1/2 to 2 complete turns of the nut before pressure is applied to the seal. If necessary, remove the tool from the crankshaft and lightly tap the seal further into the engine case before proceeding.

  5. Press the seal fully into the engine case by turning the installation tool into the crankshaft until the bolt bottoms out.

Important Installation Notes

  • Always ensure the engine case and surrounding components are clean and free of oil or debris.
  • Verify proper seal alignment before applying installation pressure.
  • Wear appropriate eye protection and use proper hand tools during installation.
  • Confirm the flywheel seal is seated evenly and flush before final assembly.
