1950-1979 Surface Rust Converter-Paintable Barrier for Metal - Aerosol
Stops Rust in Its Tracks with a Paintable Barrier
Restore peace of mind while restoring your VW. Rust Converter transforms surface rust into a stable, black polymeric coating that you can safely topcoat. The chemical formulation reacts directly with rust to convert it into iron tannate, halting the spread of corrosion without needing to grind or sand down to bare metal. Ideal for chassis spots, suspension components, pan edges, battery trays, and underbody seams where oxidation often hides.
Features
• Transforms rust into a stable, paintable surface without grinding
• Works on steel and iron—perfect for vintage VW body and chassis metal
• Use on pan halves, underbody seams, battery tray, and floor pans
• Apply by brush, HVLP, or spray—no thinning required
• Fully cures in 48 hours—can be topcoated with primer or finish paint
• Available in aerosol and liquid for brush-on applications
Application Tips
• Remove loose rust and debris with a wire brush before applying
• Surface must be clean, oil-free, and dry for best results
• Optimal temperature range: 50°F–95°F
• Allow 20 minutes between coats and at least 48 hours for full cure
• Gallon covers approx. 200–300 sq. ft. / Aerosol covers 50–75 sq. ft.
• Clean-up with soap and water immediately after use
VW Workshop Tip
Once mixed, do not return unused Rust Converter to the original container—metal exposure will activate the product. Pour what you need, reseal the container, and discard excess. For porous or pitted surfaces, heavier application may be required. Always follow up with topcoat to fully seal the surface.
Because Rust Never Sleeps
Whether you’re preserving a patina finish or restoring structural integrity beneath, this rust-converting formula keeps your project on track. Use it anywhere iron or steel shows signs of corrosion—then move forward with confidence and color.

Quick FAQ
What types of metal does Rust Converter work on?
Rust Converter is effective on ferrous metals, such as steel and iron.
How does Rust Converter work?
Rust Converter contains tannic acid, which chemically bonds with rust to convert it to iron tannate—a stable, black polymeric coating. It only reacts where rust is present.
Should the surface be prepped prior to application?
Yes.
-
Remove loose rust and debris with a wire brush.
-
Clean off grease, oil, or salt residue using a solvent or degreaser.
-
Avoid over-cleaning; only remove loose material.
-
Taking the surface down to bare metal is not recommended.
What is the proper way to apply the product for best results?
-
Ensure the surface is clean and dry before applying Rust Converter.
-
Do not apply if the surface is wet or damp.
-
Shake aerosol can thoroughly before each use.
-
Spray two thin, even coats with at least 20 minutes drying time between coats.
-
Allow 48 hours of cure time before applying any primer or topcoat.
How much coverage does it provide?
Each aerosol can covers approximately 25–35 square feet. Coverage may vary depending on surface texture and porosity.
Can the product be reused?
Yes, as long as the aerosol can remains properly sealed and stored between uses.
Will temperature affect results?
Yes.
-
Optimum temperature: 50°F to 95°F.
-
Below 50°F: Risk of improper adhesion or milky finish.
-
Above 95°F: Risk of premature evaporation, limiting effectiveness.
Is clean up easy?
Yes. Clean overspray with soap and water immediately. For nozzle clogs, invert can and spray briefly to clear tip.
Application / Directions
SHAKE AEROSOL CAN WELL BEFORE USE.
Remove all loose rust and dirt using a wire brush. Clean any residual grease and oils from the surface.
Hold can 8 to 10 inches from surface. Spray two thin, even coats. Allow 20 minutes drying time between coats. Do not allow product to puddle or run.
IMPORTANT:
For best results, store and apply between 50°F and 95°F. Do not apply in damp conditions. Invert can and spray briefly after use to clear nozzle.
