1971-1979 Ignition Lock Switch with Keys Reproduction Quality

Don't let a old, worn out Ignition Lock Cylinder keep you from enjoying your Air Cooled Volkswagen, replace it with a new Reproduction Quality Ignition Lock Cylinder. Lock Cylinders can go bad over time from use, and get loose and worn. They can also lock up and not turn, Or maybe you lost your keys, any of these are reasons you may need to change out your Ignition Lock Cylinder.

Installation requires removal of the steering wheel, turn signal switch and wiper switch. While you are at it, replace the electrical portion too (sold separately).

This Ignition Lock Cylinder includes 2 keys and is manufactured for a direct fit for your Volkswagen.

What is the difference between OEM and Reproduction Quality?

  • OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Air Cooled VW Parts are often made in Germany. However, many German OEM suppliers have moved their production elsewhere in order to stay competitive in the current global market. When they do this the quality control still remains “OEM” standard. Examples: Boge and Sachs shocks are made in Mexico, Febi Ball Joints are made in Spain, FAG and SKF Bearings are made in Korea and other Asian countries, Bosch electrical products are often made in Brazil.
  • Our Reproduction (REP) Quality Air Cooled VW Parts are manufactured to replace, fit and function similar to the OEM Part. Reproduction Quality Parts are made in various countries. We offer the Reproduction Quality as a trusted, more cost effective alternative to the OEM Quality Parts.

1. First disconnect your battery ground strap.

3. Loosen your turn signal switch and pull it up about two inches. Then remove the two screws holding your ignition housing retainer plate and remove the plate.

4. Insert your ignition key in the lock and turn it slightly. Pull the lock cylinder assembly out until the dark steel retainer spring is visible through the small hole.

5. Depress the dark retaining spring with a pointed tool while pulling out the lock cylinder with the key, and pushing the ignition wires up through the housing far enough to work on the cylinder.  With 1972 and later cars, just unplug the wire module and pull the housing upward.

NOTE: With 1972 and later you must first completely remove the turn signal and wiper switches.

7. To install your new key cylinder press the cylinder firmly into the housing until the retainer spring clicks into place.

8. Push the cylinder housing back into the steering column assembly. Plug in you wiring.

9. Replace you two-screw retaining plate, plastic bushing, circlip, turn signals and steering wheel.
