How to Install Ignition Lock with Keys 1971-1979 Beetle and Karmann Ghia

1. First disconnect your battery ground strap.

2. Remove your steering wheel. First remove the horn button or cover. then with a socket and extender, remove the nut holding the steering wheel to the steering column. Pull the steering wheel off and then remove the steel circlip and the plastic bushing.

3. Loosen your turn signal switch and pull it up about two inches. Then remove the two screws holding your ignition housing retainer plate and remove the plate.

4. Insert your ignition key in the lock and turn it slightly. Pull the lock cylinder assembly out until the dark steel retainer spring is visible through the small hole.

5. Depress the dark retaining spring with a pointed tool while pulling out the lock cylinder with the key, and pushing the ignition wires up through the housing far enough to work on the cylinder.  With 1972 and later cars, just unplug the wire module and pull the housing upward.

NOTE: With 1972 and later you must first completely remove the turn signal and wiper switches.

6. To replace the electrical portion of your switch remove the tiny brass set screw in the side of the lower switch housing and remove the electrical switch.

7. To install your new key cylinder press the cylinder firmly into the housing until the retainer spring clicks into place.

8. Push the cylinder housing back into the steering column assembly. Plug in you wiring.

9. Replace you two-screw retaining plate, plastic bushing, circlip, turn signals and steering wheel.
