Mid America Motorworks Technical Tip
MAM Part Number: 305320

Mid America Motorworks provides restoration and maintenance parts for classic Volkswagen enthusiasts. Use the following instructions as a general guide for installing the rear sway bar kit with urethane bushings on your Volkswagen suspension system.

Rear Sway Bar Installation Procedure

Step 1

Place the large rubber bushings onto the sway bar.

Step 2

Remove the shock absorber lower anchor bolt and pass it through the angle bracket smaller hole. Reinstall the bolt with the angle bracket positioned on the outside of the shock absorber bracket as illustrated.

Step 3

Assemble the end-links to the angle brackets. The mid-section of the sway bar should be positioned forward with the arms toward the rear. Do not tighten the end-link components completely at this time. Tighten only enough to keep the links snug.

Step 4

Raise the sway bar mid-section against the tubular engine supports. Position the sway bar brackets around the sway bar and mark the bolt hole spacing on the tubular engine support legs.

Step 5

Place the lock-nut on one end of the U-bolt. Insert the opposite end through one side of the sway bar bracket, then through one hole in the tubular engine support base plate, and finally through the remaining hole in the sway bar bracket. Position the base plate and bracket over the sway bar and urethane bushing. Tighten the lock-nuts to approximately 10 lbs. to secure all components to the tubular engine support.

Important Installation Notes

  • Do not fully tighten sway bar end-links until all components are properly aligned.
  • Verify clearance between the sway bar, suspension components, and engine support structure before final tightening.
  • Urethane bushings may be lightly lubricated with urethane-safe grease to reduce squeaks and improve performance.
  • Recheck all hardware after initial road test and periodically during normal vehicle maintenance.
  • Professional installation is recommended if suspension modifications or aftermarket components are present.
