Restore safe, confident handling to your vintage VW with this reproduction steering gear box—a critical component that controls how your wheels respond to input from the steering wheel. If your Volkswagen wanders on the road or exhibits excessive steering play, this gear box may be the culprit. Fits most 1950–1977 Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Thing, and Type 3 models, except Super Beetle.

• Quick-break-in: Steering may feel tight initially, then ease after ~200 miles
Fitment
• Beetle (Standard): 1950–1977

• Thing: 1973–1974
• Type 3: 1962–1973

Tech Tip
How to check for steering box wear: With the car on the ground, gently move the steering wheel using your fingertips. Free play should be no more than 25mm (1 inch) measured at the wheel rim. If it’s more, your box likely needs replacement.
Because Details Matter
You can swap tie rod ends and ball joints all day—but if your steering box is sloppy, your handling will stay vague. This part brings back tight, predictable control, just like VW intended.
