1953-2019 C1-C7 Rust Suffocator Semi Gloss - Satin Finish Rust Coating

OEM-Style Satin Black Rust Control for Chassis and Panels
Rust Suffocator Semi-Gloss Finish combines factory-correct satin sheen with serious rust encapsulation. Designed for restorers who want modern rust control that still looks period correct, this semi-gloss coating seals in rust and applies easily with brush, roller, or spray.

Features
• Semi-gloss black finish mimics OE underbody sheen
• Stops rust and prevents future corrosion spread
• Requires only minimal surface prep—bonds to rusted or clean metal
• Ideal for underbodies, floors, battery trays, and inner panels
• Topcoat optional; not UV stable if left exposed
• One-quart can covers up to 50 square feet
• Made in the USA

Application Tips
• Surface must be clean, dry, and free of loose rust or grease
• Stir thoroughly—do not shake
• Apply 2–3 thin coats with brush, roller, or spray
• Allow 2–4 hours between coats
• Do not apply below 50°F or above 85°F
• Can be topcoated after 48 hours (semi-gloss or gloss finish)

Because Details Matter
Corvette restorers know surface prep is only half the battle—what you seal it with makes all the difference. Rust Suffocator Semi-Gloss delivers a long-lasting, OEM-style finish with modern protection in the places your Corvette needs it most.

Quick FAQ

How does Rust Suffocator Semi-Gloss compare to POR-15®?

Rust Suffocator contains 77% solids, offering greater coverage and density than POR-15’s 71%. Higher solids contribute to superior rust encapsulation and more UV resistance.

Can Rust Suffocator Semi-Gloss be reused?

Yes, but only what hasn’t been exposed to air. Pour unused material through multi-temp reducer over the product in the can before sealing. Do not return thinned or used product to the original container.

Should the surface be prepped before application?

Yes.

  • Remove loose rust and debris with a wire brush.

  • Eliminate grease, oil, or salt residue using a degreaser or solvent.

  • Scuff any painted surfaces to promote adhesion.

  • Ensure surface is dry before application.

Can Rust Suffocator Semi-Gloss be applied to bare metal?

Yes.

  • Bare metal must be clean and free of contaminants.

  • For smoother metal surfaces, use a prep treatment like Metal Etch to improve adhesion before applying Rust Suffocator.

Do I need a respirator when I paint?

YES. Always work in a well-ventilated area and use a proper respirator to avoid inhaling harmful vapors.

Can I use lacquer thinner or mineral spirits to thin Rust Suffocator Semi-Gloss?

No. These products interfere with the chemistry of the paint. Only use multi-temp reducer or xylene.

What is the proper way to apply the product for best results?

  • Surface must be clean and dry.

  • Stir well before use.

  • Apply using brush, spray gun, or HVLP gun.

  • Apply two thin coats with 3–6 hours drying time between coats.

  • After 48–72 hours cure time, surface can be scuff sanded for topcoat adhesion.

How much coverage does it provide?

Each quart covers approximately 80–100 square feet. Porous or irregular surfaces may reduce coverage.

Can I paint over Rust Suffocator Semi-Gloss?

Yes. After 48–72 hours of cure time, scuff the surface to promote adhesion of primers or topcoats.

What happens if Rust Suffocator Semi-Gloss is exposed to sun?

Direct sunlight may cause satin sheen loss over time, leaving a dull black finish. This does not affect protective performance.

Will temperature affect results?

Yes.

  • Apply when both surface and product are between 50°F and 95°F.

  • Do not apply below 50°F.

How do I clean my equipment after use?

Clean immediately with multi-temp reducer or xylene. Do not allow paint to cure inside the spray gun.

Application / Directions

PREP:
Remove all contaminants from the surface. Use a wire brush to remove loose rust. For bare or sandblasted metal, use Metal Etch before painting. All surfaces must be dry.

Stir Rust Suffocator Semi-Gloss gently and thoroughly. Scoop enough material for use in one application. Before sealing, gently pour enough reducer to cover the product in the can.

APPLICATION:
Brushing: Apply unthinned. Lay down an even coat with brush. Allow 3 to 6 hours between coats. Paint can self-level.

Spraying: If needed, thin up to 10% with multi-temp reducer. Use 0.013"–0.017" tip with a pressure of 6–7 PSI for HVLP guns or 25–35 PSI for conventional guns. Spray two medium wet coats, allowing 3 to 6 hours between coats.

Fully cure in 48 to 72 hours.
