Mid America Motorworks provides restoration and performance parts for Corvette enthusiasts. Use the following instructions as a general guide for installing the Hurst Billet Plus 6-Speed Short Throw Shifter on your 1997-2004 C5 Corvette.

Before You Begin

The Hurst Billet Plus shifter is designed to reduce throw distance approximately 35% while improving shift feel and precision. The shifter accepts the factory shift knob and boot to maintain a near-stock interior appearance.

Important Installation Notes

  • Read all instructions completely before beginning installation.
  • Perform installation on a clean, level surface.
  • Apply parking brake securely.
  • Disconnect battery if desired for additional safety.
  • Moderate mechanical ability is recommended.

Console Removal Procedure

Convertible Models Only

  1. Open the convertible top storage compartment.
  2. Remove the T15 Torx screws securing the extension panel.
  3. Lift upward on the panel to remove it.

Step 1 – Remove Console Trim

  1. Open the console door.
  2. Using a small flat blade screwdriver, carefully pry upward on the traction control switch access panel.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the switch and accessory power outlet.

Step 2 – Remove Rear Console Fasteners

  1. Remove the plastic covers at the rear of the console.
  2. Using a 10mm wrench or socket, remove the retaining nuts.
  3. Pull the console rearward to release it from under the instrument panel trim plate.

Step 3 – Remove Ashtray and Console Screws

  1. Open cigarette lighter door and remove ashtray.
  2. Remove T15 Torx screws around ashtray area.
  3. Carefully pry out vented insert near ignition switch.
  4. Remove remaining Torx screws.

Step 4 – Remove Instrument Panel Trim Plate

  1. Place shifter into second gear.
  2. Pull rearward on instrument panel trim plate to release locking tabs.
  3. Lift trim plate upward and disconnect cigarette lighter electrical connector.
  4. Remove trim plate from vehicle.

Factory Shifter Removal

Step 5 – Remove Factory Shift Boot

  1. Remove the four 10mm nuts securing the factory rubber closeout boot.
  2. Lift boot upward and remove retaining band if equipped.

Step 6 – Remove Factory Shifter

  1. Place shifter into neutral.
  2. Remove the four 3/8" hex bolts securing the shifter to the housing.
  3. Lift factory shifter assembly upward and out.
  4. Remove plastic cup bushing from factory shifter and retain for reuse.
  5. Remove and discard factory gasket. Clean mounting surface thoroughly.

Hurst Billet Plus Shifter Installation

Step 7 – Install Cup Bushing

  1. Place factory plastic cup bushing onto workbench.
  2. Apply small amount of grease to shifter ball and stick bottom.
  3. Snap ball securely into cup bushing.

Step 8 – Install New Gasket

Install supplied mounting gasket onto shifter housing.

Step 9 – Install Hurst Shifter Assembly

  1. Install Hurst Billet Plus shifter into housing.
  2. Ensure cup bushing fits correctly into selector socket.
  3. Verify notch in shifter stick faces rearward.

Step 10 – Install Mounting Hardware

  1. Install four supplied socket head screws.
  2. Tighten evenly using 3/16" hex key.
  3. Torque screws to 8-10 lbs-ft.

Important:
Verify shifter base sits flush before final tightening.

Step 11 – Verify Shifter Operation

Move shifter through entire gear pattern and verify:

  • All gears engage properly
  • Smooth side-to-side movement
  • Neutral position returns freely

Step 12 – Adjust Shift Stops

Rear Stop Adjustment

  1. Pull firmly into second gear.
  2. Turn rear stop screw inward until contact is made.
  3. Back screw out 1/4 turn.
  4. Tighten jam nut.

Front Stop Adjustment

  1. Pull firmly into third gear.
  2. Turn front stop screw inward until contact is made.
  3. Back screw out 1/4 turn.
  4. Tighten jam nut.

Optional Bias Spring Adjustment

The Billet Plus shifter allows adjustable side-to-side tension.

  1. Turn adjustment screws clockwise to increase tension.
  2. Turn counterclockwise to decrease tension.

Important:

  • Do not turn adjusters more than one full turn from factory setting.
  • Thread locker is recommended during adjustment.

Factory Closeout Boot Modification

To properly fit the Hurst shifter base, modify factory closeout boot using one of the following methods:

Option A

Roll lower edge of boot inward and upward.

Option B

Carefully trim inner portion of boot using utility knife to clear larger Hurst base diameter.

Reassembly

Step 13 – Reinstall Console Components

  1. Reinstall trim plate and reconnect electrical connectors.
  2. Position console over floor tunnel studs.
  3. Install retaining nuts.
  4. Reinstall rear plastic covers.
  5. Reinstall ashtray and trim components.
  6. Reinstall convertible extension panel if equipped.

Step 14 – Reinstall Shift Knob

  1. Install shift pattern indicator.
  2. Reinstall shift knob.
  3. Install metal retaining clip securely.

Final Inspection

  • Verify all gears engage correctly.
  • Confirm no console interference during shifting.
  • Verify all electrical connectors are reattached.
  • Recheck fasteners after initial road test.
  • Retain instructions for future reference.
