Mid America Motorworks Technical Tip
MAM Part Number: 647033

Mid America Motorworks provides restoration and maintenance parts for Corvette enthusiasts. Use the following instructions as a general guide for installing the adjustable fuel pressure regulator on your LT1 or LT4-equipped vehicle.

Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator Installation Procedure

Important Safety Information

  • Perform installation only with the engine cold and in a well-ventilated area.
  • Wear proper eye protection.
  • Ensure there are no sparks, open flames, heaters, or ignition sources nearby before servicing the fuel system.

Step 1 – Connect Fuel Pressure Gauge

Hook up a fuel pressure test gauge to the fuel rail Schrader valve test port.

Recommended Tool:
Fuel Pressure Test Gauge (#100-612 or equivalent)

It is important that fuel pressure is verified before installing the new regulator. Failure to check base pressure may prevent proper tuning adjustments later.

Step 2 – Verify Existing Fuel Pressure

  1. Start the engine.
  2. Allow engine to idle.
  3. Check fuel pressure with the vacuum line connected and disconnected.

Important:
Engine must be fully warmed to operating temperature during pressure testing.

Step 3 – Relieve Fuel Pressure

  1. With the fuel pressure gauge still connected, hold the gauge hose end over a suitable fuel-safe container.
  2. Slowly release fuel pressure using the pressure relief fitting on the gauge hose.

Warning:
Fuel may spray during pressure release. Protect painted surfaces and avoid fuel contact with hot components.

Step 4 – Remove Fuel Rail Bolts

Remove the four bolts securing the fuel rails to the intake manifold.

Carefully lift the fuel rail assembly upward to gain access to the fuel pressure regulator.

Step 5 – Remove Original Fuel Pressure Regulator

  1. Remove the large retaining nut securing the regulator.
  2. Remove the fuel line retaining clip.
  3. Carefully disconnect the fuel line from the regulator.
  4. Remove the T-27 Torx fastener securing the regulator to the fuel rail.

Step 6 – Install New Adjustable Regulator

  1. Install the supplied O-ring onto the new regulator before installation.
  2. Position the regulator onto the fuel rail.
  3. Reinstall the T-27 Torx fastener.
  4. Reconnect the fuel line and retaining clip.
  5. Reinstall the retaining nut.

Step 7 – Reassemble Fuel Rail

Reinstall the fuel rail assembly onto the intake manifold and tighten all mounting bolts securely.

Step 8 – Set Initial Fuel Pressure

LT1 and LT4 engines are very sensitive to fuel pressure adjustments.

Recommended Initial Setting:

  • Start with approximately 46.5 PSI
  • Vacuum hose disconnected

Adjustment Tips:

  • Make initial changes in 1 PSI increments
  • Fine tune in 1/2 PSI increments for best drivability and performance

Final Inspection

  • Verify there are no fuel leaks.
  • Confirm proper O-ring seating.
  • Recheck fuel pressure after installation.
  • Inspect all fuel line connections before road testing.
  • Reinspect system after initial drive cycle.
