Mid America Motorworks' Meyers Manx - Dune Buggy Fun with a Corvette Twist

The MY Garage Museum on Mid America Motorworks’ corporate campus in Effingham, Ill. is home to an array of rare and one-off vehicles. The 1969 Meyers Manx that calls the Museum home brings a new definition to “rare vehicle,” incorporating a Corvette color scheme and interior into an iconic Volkswagen Dune Buggy.

Extreme Manx Makeover

A challenge was issued at Funfest for Air-Cooled VW 2011: Could a team of eight people successfully complete a Meyers Manx makeover in just two days? The Dune Buggy in question arrived at Mid America Motorworks with a fuchsia paint job and visible rust and wear. A Meyers Manx badge indicated that it was a certified Manx, but final authentication didn’t come until Bruce Meyers, creator of the Manx, confirmed that it was the real deal during Funfest.

With authenticity confirmed and a Cyber Gray paint job with Torch Red accents, the Dune Buggy was ready for a full makeover. A crew of restoration experts worked throughout the weekend while VW enthusiasts watched, upgrading the engine, exhaust, frame, interior and headlights. A severe storm put a stop to their work somewhat short of completion, requiring the help of Dr. Darby Milnor and Midwest AutoSavers to finish the job.

Dr. Darby completed the wiring, dash and gauges, converted the Buggy to disc brakes, added an aluminum axle and suspension components. The finishing touch – C5 Corvette seats and a custom back carpet, were made by Performance Choice to marry the VW and Corvette sides of Mid America Motorworks.

The Manx was unveiled at Funfest for Air-Cooled VW 2012, taking part in the Low Speed Slalom and showing just how stylish the Meyers Manx can be. See it in person 7 days a week at the MY Garage Museum & Retail Store.
