| 1. Choose the right muffler for your C5 Corvette! Both sound and ease of muffler installation are the most frequently asked questions when making a purchase. Most mufflers are purchased to alter the sound rather than to replace an old. worn-out rusted muffler. Stock mufflers will give you a sound very close to your car's original muffler. Throaty, high performance mufflers will give you a louder, deeper tone. For an easier fit, look for a muffler with a swivel inlet elbow and outlet tips. 2. Before removing existing mufflers, lay out new components to check for the correct number of parts. There is nothing worse than starting a project to later realize that you don't have the necessary parts to complete it. 3. Remove old mufflers and clean the ends of the exhaust system with steel wool or a similar abrasive product. Remove all old hangers, brackets and clamps. 4. Position new Corvette mufflers and parts in place loosely securing clamps and brackets. Support in place with stands or by tying to the frame. It is recommended that you secure the system as close to the frame as possible. This allows for a slight drop in the system that occurs when the supports are removed. When satisfied with the appearance of the mufflers, secure all clamps and hangers and remove ties. 5.If you are unsatisfied with the appearance of the muffler tips, adjustment can be made by inserting a length of pipe with the same inside diameter of the tip and carefully moving the tip into a satisfactory position. 6. Clamps should be positioned at 1/8" from edge of pipe to allow for correct compression of the outer pipe to the inner pipe. 7. Compression of the outer pipe to the inner pipe can be enhanced by "notching" the outer pipe. Some manufacturers do this, but if not, you can use a hacksaw and cut two half-inch long slits into the outer pipe, 180 degrees apart. 8. Clamps can be damaging to the underside of your car. Position the clamps to avoid the thread end from coming in contact with any components of the car-soft material is of special concern. You may choose to position the clamps to enhance the appearance from the side and rear of the car. 9. If you choose, mufflers may be painted with a Hi Temp black paint to hide them under the car. Effects are great! Painting should be done when the system is off the car, but after you have test fitted and are satisfied with the appearance. 10. If the C5 Corvette on which you are doing the exhaust installation has a composite spring, it is recommended that a heat shield be installed. Springs can be damaged from excessive heat. The previous owner may have removed factory shields and replacements may not be readily available. A simple shield can be cut from sheet metal or contact your local muffler shop to locate a universal shield. |
