Corvette went through its third major restyling in 1968 with the release of what has become known as the Stingray body style. This new third generation of the Corvette asserted itself as an all around performer both ascetically, with design cues echoing the Mako Shark and what appeared to be improved aerodynamics, and mechanically with revised spring rates & anti-roll bars as well as a lower stance for an improved center of gravity. Soon enough the Corvette had out grown it's shoes so to speak and the major tire manufactures were forced to develop a new tire to keep pace with the Corvette. In 1973 tire manufactures responded with the then brand new radial tire design like Firestone's Steel Radial 500 and Goodyear's Steelgard both of which appeared on new Corvette from 1973-1977. In 1978 Goodyear became the sole OE supplier for new Corvette tires and they released their second generation radial tire, the Goodyear Polysteel Radial. Goodyear's new Polysteel Radial and Radial GT introduced the new P-Series radial tire capable of matching the handling performance of the Corvette.
