Believe it or not your Corvette's original wiring harness had a service life of only 10 years. If your 1953 is still utilizing it's original wiring harness you have exceeded the service life of your Corvette's electrical harness by over 40 years. When we hear people telling us that their vintage Corvette's original wiring harness is still in "great shape" we have to disagree. Many people feel they can recondition their Corvette's original harnesses by simply cleaning and re-taping them. That couldn't be further from the truth. It all comes down to the issue of deterioration. There is no practical way to completely seal off the circulation of air and moisture between individual strands in a wire. Additionally, most automotive wiring is not protected from hydrocarbon contamination. The majority of automotive wire is made of copper strands. Copper is considered to be an active metal, which means that it readily reacts with oxygen, moisture and airborne pollutants. To prove my point, leave a nicely polished copper kettle sitting out in your kitchen for a month or two and watch it lose its shine. The same applies to stranded, automotive grade, copper wire. Corrosion causes electrical resistance. Electrical resistance causes heat and other electrical anomalies. If your Corvette's wiring has become brittle and cracked, it is now in the next stage of deterioration, and is in need of immediate replacement. This condition is especially common for wiring subject to the intense heat of an engine compartment. At this stage, a short circuit-to-ground is eminent. And in a worst case scenario a short circuit-to-ground can lead to a fire.
